Hanover Private are real estate specialists in super prime property sales and lettings in Mayfair.

Occupying the land between Hyde Park, Oxford Street, Piccadilly and Regent Street, Mayfair offers some of the most centrally located, luxurious and exclusive properties in London. The area has existed since the 17th century, when it was the site of the annual May Fair, a fortnight-long local fair beginning on May Day which was moved to Bow in 1764 after complaints from residents.

The Mayfair we recognise today was largely built by the Grosvenor family, as an elegant residential district close to the amenities of the West End, while much of the land here was purchased by the Rothschild family in the 19th century, and the Crown also owns a portion of the quarter. Mayfair still retains many aristocratic, political and literary connections, with former residents including Winston Churchill, the Duke of Wellington and Oscar Wilde.

Architecture in Mayfair

The residential architecture in Mayfair is largely Georgian, with many grand terraced properties arranged around beautiful leafy garden squares. A number of homes are Grade II listed, and most have been refurbished to a high contemporary standard.

What makes Mayfair special

The central location of Mayfair allows residents to enjoy all the highlights of London with ease, but the influence of embassies located here, such as the American Embassy and the Canadian Embassy, add a sense of security and safety not usually found in city centres. Meanwhile, Mayfair also enjoys hidden areas and secret gardens just for residents, with some properties benefitting from private green spaces in the heart of London.

Mayfair property types

Space is at a premium in Mayfair and property here is highly desirable, so it can occasionally be challenging to find the right house. Most residential homes are Georgian terraced houses, and some have been combined to maximise living space for large families or those with a number of staff to accommodate. Great houses, which became offices, are now being converted back to residential use due to the demand in this area, so finding an unmodernised property to refurbish is possible.

The most prestigious addresses in Mayfair are Berkeley Square, Park Lane, and Grosvenor Square, although Charles Street, Farm Street and Hill Street also offer coveted large, luxurious properties.
